ParshatVaetchanan is a special parsha, and not only because we are blessed to celebrate a bat mitzvah this Shabbat. It contains two major sections of Torah that we are all quite familiar with- The first paragraph of the Shema, and the second iteration of the Ten Commandments.
We read:
And these words, which I command to you this day, take them to heart:
Teach them to your children, and speak of them in your rest and in your home, as well as in your journeys on the road. (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).
These words, part of the Shema’s first paragraph, are traditionally repeated at least twice daily, once in the morning service and once in the evening service. There are several lessons derived from this otherwise straightforward passage.
First, it is widely understood that the words of the Shema come to teach us that the work of instilling the wisdom and knowledge of our Torah is not a task for a single time or place. It is something that must be done at all times, whether rising or getting ready for sleep, whether in the comfort of our homes or in the midst of work and travel.
Second, the commands in the first paragraph are all singular in nature- you specifically (yes, you) are to fulfill them. These are not commands for a group, or directed at a non-specific person. Each of us is meant to repeat them and take them to heart, and every repetition conveys to another person that they, and they alone, must do so as well.
Third, we learn from this paragraph that we must each ensure our children are taught them at any time and in any place. These obligations are not just about ourselves, but those who look to us to understand the world and how to live in it. Our obligations are not just personal, but relational- they depend on our engaging with and instilling in our children a love of God, and a commitment to living a life of mitzvot.
It is certainly no accident that this text forms a foundation of belief and practice for Judaism, nor that it is found alongside a reiteration of the Ten Commandments in our parsha. Now, as always, we cannot divorce personal obligation, the “you will”, from communal and relational obligations “teach them to your children”. The laws that we cherish as fundamental to our society, to ethical and just ways of living, first require a commitment from each of us not only to abide by them, but to ensure we teach others why and how to do so as well.
May we each be blessed to affirm, and reaffirm, our commitments and the commitments of those we love this and every Shabbat.
There will be no Maimonides Class on Sunday, August 2nd.
Davening will still take place at 9:00 AM
