Is Passover really different this year? Well, Pesach is Pesach, we all know that. But this year the calendar is making it a little strange. It’s not common we have the first day of a holiday fall on a Sunday, making things a little more interesting in the days leading up to the big Holiday.
Every other Pesach we have the Fast of the First Born on the day before the holiday. Saturday is not a great day for a fast and neither is Friday, so this year we move it to Thursday.
Every other pesach we have the search for hametz (leavening) the evening of the day before the holiday. Friday night is, again, not a good night to search for hametz with a candle, so this year we move it to Thursday night.
Every other Pesach we burn the hametz in the first four hours of the day before the holiday. Saturday is, yet again, not a good day to burn anything, so this year we move our Biur Hametz (Burning of Hametz) to Friday. Some want to keep it to the same time of day, but any time before candle lighting on Friday will do.
Every other Pesach we stop eating hametz after the fourth hour before the holiday starts. That’s a hard stop. This year we will also stop eating hametz on Saturday at about 10:30 AM.
But, wait a minute. What do we do about Friday night Shabbat dinner after we’ve burned our hametz? A Difficulty? No, no problem. We dispose of our hametz up until we can no longer eat it, and we dispose of it by burning because it’s cool. Who says you can’t just flush your hametz or give it away or stick it in the outside garbage can? Anyone that is in the weekly Rambam class knows they had no flush toilets (disgusting place was the world in the 13th Century), I prefer to flush when I can’t burn.
Now, what about Saturday lunch? We are obligated to say Kiddush and Hamotzi at this second meal on Shabbat. Back in the day, before the curse of 2020, we had wonderful lunches together after services with wine, Challah, great food, company, singing, and I can go on. That started after services, around noon. The last time this strange calendar thing happened, we started services (because you can’t have a meal before praying), stopped right before the Torah service, went to the courtyard, said Kiddush and Hamotzi, gathered the leftover crumbs, flushed them, and then went back for Torah service, and finished the service.
This year we’re still on Zoom (soon, soon, calm down…). We will start services on Saturday, 3/27/2021, at 9:00 AM. We will stop before we normally do the Torah discussion, and we will all say Kiddush, Hamotzi, flush, and then finish the service. Wow, this is going to be interesting!!
