Everyone is welcome at our adult education sessions: congregational members and the community at large, Jews and non-Jews. Most classes are free or low-cost, though donations are always welcome and very gratefully accepted.

Text Study

Sunday Morning Study

This year’s topic is Zohar.  No previous experience necessary; readings in both Hebrew and English. Anyone who wishes to daven may login at 9:00 am. 
The Zoom link is in the TBS-EV weekly bulletin.

A Little Mishnah

Warm-up for  the High Holidays with some lessons from Mishnah. This class is usually offered in Aug-Sept.

Community

Chai Choliday Challah Bake

Come join the whole community to bake challah together! We will mix the ingredients and braid the dough, then take it home to finish rising and bake. If you don’t know how to bake challah, we’ll show you. It’s easier than you think! We will provide ingredients.
This is an annual activity, usually a few days before Rosh Hashanah.

Hebrew

Learn to Read Hebrew

Learn the mysteries of the Hebrew alphabet. We will learn it all in just 5 weeks. 
This course is taught multiple times during the year.

Hebrew Conversation

Ongoing weekly class. Yes, there is homework!
Prerequisite: You must be able to read Hebrew and have a simple conversation. You should also be able to read script.

Hebrew Vocabulary for Beginners

You’ve learned to read – Hurray! Now learn what you’re saying.
We are going to learn some vocabulary that is very common in the prayerbook. We will focus on words found in the prayers you are most likely to recognize, such as Sh’ma, Amidah, and Aleinu.
The lessons will be short (30 minutes) and give you a foundation for identifying familiar words.
Prerequisite: You must be able to read Hebrew.

Miller Introduction to Judaism  


Not for converts only! Whether you’re exploring Judaism for the first time or reconnecting after a long absence, this course is for you. This is a 24-week course, beginning in the fall. Students in this class must also attend Learn to Read Hebrew, unless they can already read. Contact Lynne adultedchair@tbsev.org if you missed that class.

Learn to Chant Torah or Haftarah or Lead Services

This project has been created to provide tutoring, mentoring, and guidance to our members to be able to lead parts or all of our Friday Night and Saturday Morning Services. Our target audience is post-bnai mitzvah and older in age.
Prerequisite: Hebrew reading and some singing ability are a good starting point.
Class dates and location: These are one-on-one classes, determined by teacher and student

Judaism

“How-to” on Services, High Holiday Edition

What’s happening up there on the bima? What do I do if they call my name? This is a hands-on class. Practice opening the ark, “dressing” the Torah, being called for an aliyah and more.

Israel

Israeli Music, Media and More

Singers / musicians from Israel and America will be discussed. Each class explores a different theme.

Israeli Dance

Better exercise and more fun than counting steps! Come learn “Rikudei Am,” or Israeli Folk Dancing. No experience necessary. We will teach the first hour and have open dancing the second hour.
